How do I connect my Kindle to a Wi-Fi network?
Many Wi-Fi networks require a password for security purposes. If your Kindle is Wi-Fi capable and you are in range of a Wi-Fi network, you may need to enter your Wi-Fi network password to allow your Kindle to connect to Wi-Fi and download Kindle Books. See Amazon Help: Connecting with Wi-Fi.
What if I can't download a Kindle Book title via Wi-Fi?
At the end of the checkout process, if your Kindle is not Wi-Fi capable or you do not have an active Wi-Fi connection, you will see a message alerting you and giving you the option to download the ebook to transfer via USB.
Click the "Download now" button.
You will be prompted to download an AZW file to your computer. Instructions for how to save the file will appear on-screen.
How do I transfer an ebook to a Kindle via USB?
To transfer a public library ebook to a Kindle via USB, first you will need to check out a Kindle Book from the Digital Download Center. Then follow these steps:
If you have not already downloaded the AZW ebook file to your computer, open the Manage Your Kindle page.
You'll see Your Kindle Library. To the right of the book title you want to transfer to your Kindle, click Actions.
Select "Download & transfer via USB."
You may be prompted to open or save the file; choose "Save" and select a location that is easy to find again, such as the desktop. The file you download will end with .azw.
Connect your Kindle to your computer using the USB cable. Plug the larger end of the USB cable into an available USB port or a powered USB hub connected to your computer, and the smaller end into your Kindle.
When connected to your computer, your Kindle will go into USB drive mode and you won't be able to use the device.
Your Kindle will appear in the same location as external USB drives usually appear. For Windows users, this is typically in the "Computer" or "My Computer" menu. For Mac users, the drive will appear on the desktop.
Open the Kindle drive. You will see several folders inside, one of which will be named "documents." This is the folder you will move your downloaded Kindle content into.
Locate your downloaded file, and drag and drop it into the correct file.
Safely eject your Kindle from your computer, then unplug the USB cable. The file you transfered will now appear on your Kindle Home screen.
My Kindle has a web browser. Do I need to use a PC/Mac to get a Kindle Book onto my Kindle?
Kindle Fire is the only type of Kindle device on which you can complete the check out and download process entirely on the device, without the use of a PC/Mac. The OverDrive Media Console app for Android is required and must be downloaded from the OverDrive website (as of 11/28/11 it is not available in the Amazon Appstore). Once the OverDrive Media Console app is installed on the Kindle Fire, EPUB ebooks, MP3 audiobooks, and Kindle Books can be downloaded directly to the device. (EPUB ebooks and MP3 audiobooks will be opened with the OverDrive Media Console app and Kindle Books will be opened with the regular Kindle reading app.)
If you have any other type of Kindle, you must check out a Kindle Book title via a PC/Mac before sending it to your Kindle.
How can I download EPUB ebooks and MP3 audiobooks to my Kindle Fire?
To download EPUB e-books or MP3 audiobooks to your Kindle Fire:
Install the OverDrive Media Console Android App on your Kindle Fire. It is not available in the Amazon Appstore. Instead, go to http://overdrive.com/Software/omc/ and click on "Download OverDrive Media Console for Android from OverDrive." You may want to watch the video about how to use the app. (This video highlights the use of the app on the iPad, but it works similarly on the Fire.)
Be sure you have allowed installations of apps on your Kindle Fire. Here are the steps to do so:
From the Home screen, tap the 'Quick Settings' icon and select More.
Tap Device.
Turn the switch for "Allow Installation of Applications" to the "on" position.
You must have a WiFi connection to download OverDrive books to a Kindle Fire. There is no USB port.
I have the Kindle app on my iPhone/mobile device. Do I need to use a PC/Mac to get a Kindle Book onto my iPhone/mobile device?
Yes, a PC or Mac is required to check out a Kindle Book. If you have the Kindle app on your iPhone/mobile device, you may choose to send the Kindle Book to the Kindle app on your iPhone/mobile device, but the Kindle Book checkout process must be done on the PC or Mac.
If you want to get public library ebooks on your iPhone/mobile device without using a PC/Mac at any point in the process, you must use the OverDrive Media Console App for your device and check out ebook titles in EPUB format rather than Kindle Books.
Why did I receive an email from Amazon.com following my use of an ebook from the library?
You may receive renewal or purchase messages from Amazon regarding your OverDrive download of library eBooks to Kindle readers. These messages are not from WPLC or your local library, and do not affect the terms of your library download. WPLC never solicits purchases, or charges any fees for the use of digital material.
