Using eBooks

What is an OverDrive eBook?

An eBook is a digital version of a print book that has been optimized for on-screen reading. eBooks are available in three formats: Kindle Book, Adobe, EPUB and Adobe PDF.

EPUB & PDF eBook Overview (Video): Downloading an eBook to a Computer and Transferring to an eBook Device

How do I download an EPUB/PDF eBook?

You must have the appropriate digital book software (Adobe Digital Editions) downloaded and installed on your computer before you download your EPUB/PDF eBook.

Do you have Adobe Digital Editions installed?

* No? Follow the Download and Installation Instructions for Adobe Digital Editions.

* Yes? Please continue with the instructions listed below to download your eBook.

Since you already have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your computer, choose "Download" to begin downloading the eBook you have checked out.

A dialog will open asking if you want to Open or Save the file.  Choose Open.

The book will open in Adobe Digital Editions.

What if I chose "Save" and ended up downloading an ".acsm" file?  How do I open my eBook?

If you have Adobe Digital Editions installed, you can open the 'urllink.acsm' file as follows…

  1. Right-click the 'urllink.acsm' file.
  2. Select 'Open With', and choose 'Adobe Digital Editions'.
  3. Click 'OK'

Adobe Digital Editions opens and downloads the eBook.

What if Adobe Digital Editions does not automatically open my eBook?

If your eBook does not automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions, you may need to change which program deals with .acsm files.  (When you download an eBook, the type of file you are downloading is an .acsm file.)  Please follow these steps to ensure that Adobe Digital Editions opens .acsm files in the future.

Can I use OverDrive eBooks with my Kindle?  Which e-reader devices are compatible?

Yes! Supported Kindle devices include any generation Kindle device, all free Kindle apps, and web browsers with Kindle Cloud Reader. Other devices capable of displaying OverDrive eBooks are listed in the Device Reource Center

How do I transfer my EPUB/PDF eBook to my ebook reader?

The following steps and screen shots use a Sony Reader as an example, but the process is the same for all supported ebook readers.

Turn on your Sony Reader and connect it to your computer. Your Sony Reader must be authorized with the same Adobe ID you used to authorize Adobe Digital Editions in order to transfer files with DRM protection.  (More information about activating Adobe Digital Editions and steps to activate Adobe Digital Editions with an Adobe ID). Sony's Reader Library software must also be installed.

When you download an eBook, it should automatically open in Adobe Digital Editions. In order to transfer it to a Sony Reader, switch to Library View by clicking on the icon in the upper left-hand corner of the window.

Library View will show you a list of your bookshelves on the left and all eBooks you have downloaded on the right. Your Sony Reader should be listed in the Bookshelves section. Click on the eBook you want to transfer to select it.

Drag and drop the eBook to the Sony Reader icon at the bottom of your bookshelves.

The transfer process takes only a second.

When you are done transferring eBooks, close Adobe Digital Editions and disconnect your Sony Reader from your computer.

Nook Troubleshooting

How do I remove eBooks from my nook?

  1. Connect the nook to the computer.
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.  The nook should show up in Adobe Digital Editions under Bookshelves in the left pane.
  3. Click on the nook in the Bookshelves list.  The contents of the nook will display in the right pane.
  4. Hover over the book that is to be deleted from the nook, and click the arrow at the top left corner of the book.  A little menu will pop down.
  5. Select "Delete item" from the menu.

Where can I find additional information about using the Barnes & Noble nook?

"User not activated" nook Error:  How to reset the Nook's Adobe Digital Editions folder

Problem:  My computer and my nook are both activated with the same Adobe ID, but after transferring a book to the nook and ejecting, the nook gives the error "User not activated" when I try to read the book.

Solution:  Reset the Adobe Digital Editions folder on the nook.

  1. Close Adobe Digital Editions if it is open.
  2. Connect the nook to your computer.
  3. Open the nook as a disk drive (through Computer or My Computer) so you can see the folders inside it.
  4. Delete the Adobe Digital Editions folder from the nook. (On PCs it may be named ".adobe_digital_editions"; on Macs look for a Digital Editions folder.)
  5. Eject the nook from the computer.
  6. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  7. Connect the nook to your computer again.
  8. Adobe Digital Editions will detect the nook and display the 'Device Setup Assistant' dialog box.
  9. Click 'Authorize Device'.
Adobe Digital Editions activates the nook. You can now transfer DRM-protected Adobe eBooks to the nook.

Adobe Digital Editions does not recognize the Nook as a bookshelf when it is connected to the computer.

  1. Close Adobe Digital Editions.
  2. Properly eject and disconnect the Nook.
  3. Reconnect the Nook.
  4. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  5. It may take a few seconds for ADE to recognize the Nook
  6. If that still does not get ADE recognizing the Nook as a bookshelf:
    1. Keep ADE open.
    2. Eject and disconnect the Nook.
    3. Reconnect the Nook.

I do not get an automatic prompt to authorize the Nook in Adobe Digital Editions:  How to manually authorize an ebook device

  1. Connect the Nook to your computer.
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions.
  3. Click on the Nook in the list of bookshelves in the left panel to select it.
  4. Click the Options button at the bottom of the left panel.
  5. Select Authorize (or Activate) and follow the prompts to authorize the Nook.

If manual authorization fails AND Adobe Digital Editions does not give you an automatic prompt to enter your Adobe ID for your Nook:

Note: these steps may result in the loss of content you have loaded on your Nook if you do not back up your content properly.  Please refer to the Nook User Guide that came with your Nook.

To do these steps, you will need:

- Your Barnes & Noble account info (email & password)
- Your Adobe ID info (email & password)
- Home Wi-Fi connection
- It may be helpful to have the Nook User Guide close by
- Nook
- Computer with Internet connection

1. Connect the Nook to your home WiFi

2. "Unregister" the Nook from the Barnes & Noble account.
p. 68-69 "Unregistering your NOOK" http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pimages/nook/download/User_Guide_NOOK_v1_4.pdf

- On the Home menu, tap settings
- Tap Device > Unregister your nook
- Tap Confirm

3. Turn the Nook power off.

4. Power the Nook on again.

5. Reset all the Nook Settings to factory default.
p. 173 of http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pimages/nook/download/User_Guide_NOOK_v1_4.pdf

6. Register the Nook again to the previously established Barnes & Noble account
p. 66-67 "Manual Registration"
http://images.barnesandnoble.com/pimages/nook/download/User_Guide_NOOK_v1_4.pdf

7. On the computer, open Adobe Digital Editions (ADE).
- Press 'Command+Shift+D' to deactivate ADE.
- Select 'Deauthorize'.

8. Once both of these items have been deactivated, please open ADE and select 'Authorize computer' by clicking on the down-arrow next to
Library.
- Enter your Adobe ID information.

9. Once ADE has been authorized, please connect the Nook and follow the prompts to activate it (making sure you activate the device
using the same Adobe ID).

- If the Nook never appears as a bookshelf in ADE, close ADE, open the Nook drive on your computer, delete the Digital Editions folder, eject and disconnect the Nook, reconnect it, and reopen ADE.
- If you are not prompted to enter your Adobe ID to authorize the Nook, try clicking on the Nook bookshelf in ADE and selecting Options > Authorize or Activate (I'm unsure of the wording.)

10. Once all of those steps have been taken, please re-download your titles from http://dbooks.wplc.info/ and attempt to transfer them to your Nook using ADE.

Click 'Authorize Device'.
Adobe Digital Editions activates the eBook device. You can now transfer DRM-protected Adobe eBooks to the device.
