OverDrive and Apple Devices (computer to Apple device transfers)


 

What additional requirements are there for transferring OverDrive MP3 Audiobook titles to Apple devices?

If you intend to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobook titles to an Apple device using OverDrive Media Console, please note the following…

  • OverDrive Media Console v3.0 (or newer) for Windows or OverDrive Media Console for Mac v1.0 (or newer) must be installed.
  • iTunes v7.6.2.9 (or newer) and QuickTime v7.4.5 (or newer) must be installed. Note that iTunes v8.1.0.52 (or newer) is recommended for use with the iPod shuffle.
  • The Apple device must be formatted for use with your operating system.
  • iTunes v8.1.0.52 (or newer) is required when using the OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard to transfer audiobooks to the iPod shuffle. If you are using an older version of iTunes, you can use iTunes to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to the iPod shuffle.
  • If you want to use the OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard to transfer content to an Apple device, the setting 'Manually manage music…' must be enabled in iTunes before you can complete the transfer.  Adjust this setting as follows…
    • Connect your device to your computer.
    • If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes (v7.6.2.9 or newer).
    • In iTunes, locate your device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click your device. The 'Summary' screen is displayed. (For iPod Shuffle, select the 'Settings' tab).
    • If it is not already checked, place a checkmark next to option 'Manually manage music…'. (For iPod Shuffle, place a checkmark next to 'Enable disk use' -- you may need to scroll down.)
    • Click the 'Apply' button.  The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and your changes are saved.
    • If desired, close iTunes.

How do I transfer an OverDrive MP3 Audiobook to an iTunes Library on Windows?

To transfer an OverDrive MP3 Audiobook title to an iTunes Library using OverDrive Media Console v3.2 (or newer) Transfer Wizard, make sure you have iTunes v7.6.2.9 (or newer) and QuickTime v7.4.5 (or newer) installed.

Follow these steps to transfer an OverDrive MP3 Audiobook to an iTunes Library…

  1. In OverDrive Media Console, highlight the OverDrive MP3 Audiobook title you want to transfer and click the 'Transfer' button.  The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is displayed.
  2. Verify that the correct title is displayed on the first screen of the Transfer Wizard and click 'Next'.  The Transfer Wizard searches for iTunes. When iTunes is detected, the 'Confirm' screen is displayed.
  3. Select 'iTunes Library' from the 'Player' drop-down menu. (Note that if you don't see an option for iTunes Library, you may need to take some extra steps. For more information on transfer to iTunes Library, click here.)
  4. Select the Part(s) you want to transfer to the iTunes Library by checking the box(es) next to the Part number(s).
  5. Click the 'Next >' button to continue.  The 'Progress' screen is displayed. Once the transfer is complete, the 'Success' screen is displayed.
  6. Click 'Finish' to exit Transfer Wizard.

You can now play the OverDrive MP3 Audiobook title in iTunes.

[Windows Only] When attempting to transfer a title to the iTunes Library using OverDrive Media Console v3.2 (or newer) for Windows, the Transfer Wizard does not offer the 'iTunes Library' option. What should I do?

As a first step, ensure that you have the necessary software installed. In order to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an iTunes Library, you must have OverDrive Media Console v3.2 (or newer), iTunes v7.6.2.9 (or newer), QuickTime 7.4.5 (or newer) installed on Windows 98 SE (or newer).

Before proceeding, open iTunes, and if any iTunes dialog boxes open, close them.

You may need to disconnect your device and attempt the transfer again. If you have a device attached to your computer, follow these steps…

  1. If the Transfer Wizard is open, click the 'Cancel' button in the OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard.  The Transfer Wizard closes.
  2. Disconnect the device from your computer.
  3. In OverDrive Media Console, highlight the OverDrive MP3 Audiobook title you want to transfer and click the 'Transfer' button.  The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard is displayed.
  4. Verify that the correct title is displayed on the first screen of the Transfer Wizard and click 'Next'.  The Transfer Wizard searches for iTunes. When iTunes is detected, the 'Confirm' screen is displayed.

How do I add OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to my iTunes Library on the Mac?

You can browse to and drag OverDrive MP3 Audiobook files into the iTunes Library.

Alternatively, you can use iTunes to add titles to the iTunes Library. Follow these steps to add titles to the iTunes Library…

  1. Open iTunes and go to File > Add to Library.  The 'Add to Library' dialog box is displayed.
  2. Browse to Documents > My Media > MP3 Audiobooks > [Title of Book] to add the files for a specific title to iTunes, or browse to Documents > My Media > MP3 Audiobooks, to add files for all the titles you have acquired to iTunes.
  3. Click 'Open'.

iTunes imports the OverDrive MP3 Audiobook files to the library. Once this process is complete, you can listen to the title(s) with iTunes and if desired, transfer to your Apple device.

 

How do I delete an OverDrive audiobook from my iPod?

OverDrive titles can be deleted from Apple devices through iTunes.  Here are the steps:

  1. Connect the device to your computer (iTunes will open)
  2. In iTunes, select your iPod in the left panel (under Devices).  The contents of your iPod will appear in the right panel.
  3. In the right panel, select the title you wish to remove and press the Delete or Backspace key

 

I downloaded an iPod-compatible book to my computer, but now it says that transfer to Apple devices is not permitted. What should I do?

  1. Find the book in the Digital Download Center website and check to be sure that the iPod icon is higlighted and that it says transfer to Apple devices IS permitted.
  2. Open OverDrive Media Console and delete the book (all parts).
  3. Open a web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, etc.) and delete temporary Internet files. 
    1. Firefox 2-3:

      a. In Firefox, go to Tools > Clear Private Data.

      b. Make sure all options are checked.

      c. Click the 'Clear Private Data Now' button

    2. Internet Explorer 7:

      a. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options.

      b. On the 'General' tab, in the Browsing history' section, click the

      'Delete' button.

      c. Click the 'Delete all’ button at the bottom of this menu.

      d. Click 'Yes'.

  4. Download the book to your computer again by going to the Digital Download Center website, clicking the "My Account" link at the top right corner of the page, logging in if prompted, and using the download link for the book in the "Checked Out" section of your account.
  5. Transfer to Apple devices should now be permitted for the downloaded title.

 

I downloaded an iPod-compatible book to my computer, but the OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard doesn't recognize my iPod is connected.  What should I do?

  1. If you connected the device and immediately attempted to transfer files, it is possible that Windows had not yet recognized the device. Wait a few moments after connecting the device and attempt the transfer again.
  2. If you are using a Windows computer, confirm that your system and iPod meet the additional requirements for transferring OverDrive audiobooks to Apple devices
  3. If none of the previous suggestions resolve the problem:
    1. Follow the steps to uninstall and reinstall iTunes.
    2. Re-confirm that the iTunes setting "Manually manage music" is enabled.
    3. Attempt to transfer the book again through OverDrive Media Console.

 

I downloaded a book to my iPad with the OverDrive Media Console app, but there are no titles listed in My Library. Where did the book go?

The iPad may need to be rebooted to display the new title in My Library.  Turn off the iPad and turn it back on.  If the book does not appear in My Library after restarting the iPad, try downloading it again.

 

I am trying to transfer a WMA audiobook to my iOS5 device, but the parts never show up on my device, or it creates an empty playlist.

  1. Please download and install the latest version of OverDrive Media Console for Windows from http://overdrive.com/Software/omc/ (on the PC).
  2. Use the standard steps for transferring a WMA audiobook to an Apple device.
  3. Once you have transferred a WMA audiobook to your device, a playlist will be created for the audiobook. Please note that WMA audiobooks will not be listed in 'Audiobooks' on your iOS 5 device. You may need to take the following steps to move parts of the audiobook to your playlist:
    1. Connect your device to your computer.
    2. Open iTunes.
    3. Click on 'Books' located under your device name in the left column of iTunes.
    4. Drag the parts over to the playlist created for the audiobook, which is also located under your device name in iTunes.
    5. Verify that the parts are in the correct order.
