Using portable devices
What portable devices does OverDrive work with?
Any device that supports Windows Media Format is compatible. See OverDrive's Known Compatible Devices list for a list of supported devices.
If a device isn't on that list, you might be able to use it by burning the audiobook to CD, loading the files into the appropriate software, and transferring the files to the device.

How do I transfer the book to a supported device?
You must have your supported audio device installed on your PC before you can transfer your audio book.
In addition, the book's Digital Rights Information notice must contain the notice "This title can be transferred to a portable device during the lending period". (Some publishers require us to disable "Transfer to device" functionality.)

These instructions are for OverDrive Media Console version 2.1. Transferring files to a portable device is greatly simplified with the use of OverDrive Media Console v2.1, which is available to download now. Instructions for older versions of the OverDrive Media Console are available on the WPLC Digital Books Help Basics page.
Once you've downloaded your audio book, it is available within the OverDrive Media Console to transfer to your audio device. Simply select the audio book you would like to listen to and choose "Transfer" on the toolbar.

The OverDrive Media Console Transfer Wizard will open.

Click Next.

Select the parts of the audiobook you want to transfer to your device, then cilck Next.

Please wait while the files are transferred, then click Next.

A confirmation message will appear. Click Finish. You should now be able to play the audio book from your device.

Once I transfer my title to a portable device, will it expire?
Audio books that are transfered to portable devices do not expire. You can use the audio files as long as you want.
Error message: 'The selected portable player could not be found. This process will be aborted. Please reconnect your device and try again.'
This error message is associated with OverDrive Media Console v3.1. If you see this error message while attempting to transfer files to your portable device, especially if you have been able to transfer files to the player in the past, you may have to install an updated version of the OverDrive Media Console (v3.1.01 or higher). See "How do I download and install the OverDrive Media Console?"
If you receive an error message that your player could not be found and you are not using OverDrive Media Console v3.1:
- Verify that your computer recognizes the portable device (one way to check is to open My Computer to see if it is connected)
- Verify that you are correctly following OverDrive's instructions for "How to transfer an OverDrive Media title to a portable device using OverDrive Media Console v3.0 (or newer)"
- If your player is still not recognized, your device may not be compatible with the service. See OverDrive's "Why are some devices supported while others are not?"
