Borrowing audio books

Do I need to set up an account?

No.  Your account for the Wisconsin Digital Download Center is accessed with a valid library card issued by a Wisconsin Library.  Sign in to your account here.

If you have problems signing in with your library card, please contact the public library that issued the card.

How do I check out a digital audio book?

Once you have located a book you'd like to check out in the Digital Book Catalog & Download Center, confirm it is available by checking that there are available copies. If a copy is available for check out, click on "Add to My Cart".

Titles added to your cart will remain there for 30 minutes before they are returned to the library's collection. Please be sure to complete your checkout within this timeframe to avoid losing access to your desired title(s).

If you would like to check out another title (you may have up to two titles checked out at the same time), click "Continue Browsing".

If you change your mind about checking out the book you've selected, click "remove".

If you are ready to check out the book(s) you have added to your cart, click "Proceed to Checkout".

Upon proceeding to the checkout, you will be asked to sign in. Choose your library system from the menu, enter your library bar code number and PIN, if required, and click "Sign In".

If you have selected an MP3 Audiobook, you will be asked to agree to the Terms of Use for MP3 Titles

Next, you will be asked to "Confirm check out."

You may see this Security Alert -- simply click Yes to continue!

The book you selected should now be checked out to you. Today's date should be listed under "Checked out on", and your audio book checkout will expire automatically on the date listed under "Expires on".

Now you can proceed to the next step... downloading your audio book!

How do I return an item early?

Unfortunately, you cannot return items early because of a contract issue with the publishers. If you are going to miss an item you put on hold because you have your maximum items checked out, and your hold is available, contact your local library for help.

I am getting a message saying 'Download limit has been reached.' What's going on?

This error is generated when users exceed the download limit for a license file. The download limit for OverDrive is 3 attempts. This means that the patron will receive this message if they click the download button more than 3 times.

Sometimes, you may have downloaded parts, but cannot complete the download because the button is no longer active. If this is the case, you may download the remaining parts via the OverDrive Media Console by performing the steps below:

  1. Open the OverDrive Media Console
  2. Right-Click the title of the book, and select 'Download Part(s)'
  3. In the 'Download Part(s)' dialog box, choose which part(s) they would like to download by placing a checkmark next to the desired part(s), then click the 'OK' button.

OverDrive can also reactivate the title to remove this restriction. Call your local library and provide your library card number as well as the affected title.

Can I renew an item?

OverDrive does not currently offer a renewal function, but if you would like to "renew" a title (when there are no holds on it) you may take the following steps to effect something close.

  1. When the title expires, 'do not' delete it from the OverDrive Media Console.
  2. On the library site, check the title out again and click 'Download.'  At the 'Get Media' window, OverDrive Media Console will display the folder previously used to download the title.
  3. Click 'OK.'  The license with the new expiration date has been obtained and the audio files do not need to be downloaded again.

Obtaining a new license with an updated expiration date should provide the same end result as 'renewing' a title.

Why did I get an error message saying 'Privilege has expired'?

If you received the message "We're sorry, but the specified library patron account information is not valid. Details: (1) Privilege has expired", you need to contact your local public library and check the status of your library account. Your library card may have expired or you may have fines or other issues that prevent you from using the digital library service.
